Chapel Club recuerda instantáneamente a The Smiths y a Pop shoegazero de los ochenta, pero también a My Bloody Valentine, White Lies o Editors. Elegancia, algo de melodrama, letras trabajadas y buenas armonías. Este jovencísimo cuarteto londinense apenas tiene una decena de canciones en la calle, y la última que han puesto en circulación, este “O Maybe I”, nos ha puesto las orejas en modo Pointer.

La semana que viene este quinteto de Los Angeles lanzará su primer disco largo, Gorilla Manor (Frenchkiss Records, 2010) y por lo que adelantan apunta pero que muy alto. Dicen que Local Natives tiene el dramatismo de Arcade Fire, el ritmo luminoso de Vampire Weekend y algo de las armonías hippies de Fleet Foxes. Lo que si es cierto (y sorprendente)  es que son en verdad muy buenos para ser tan jovencitos. El próximo 11 de febrero actuarán en Madrid (Moby Dick), y el 12, en Barcelona (Pop Bar).

Sólido y original dúo electrónico de New York que a punto está de estrenar nuevo álbum, Liquid Love (2010, Wall of Sound), el cuarto de una carrera que cumple ya diez años. Si el resto de este último trabajo está a la altura del adelanto, “Disconnected”, seguro que hablamos de uno de los discos más interesantes y recomendables de este inicio de 2010.  También se puede escuchar/descargar otro estupendo tema completamente gratis en su web: “Criss Cross”. 

Telekinesis es el proyecto musical de Michael Benjamin Lerner, un talentoso e inquieto gafapasta de Seattle (aunque algo alejado del Grunge local de Nirvana o Soundgarden porque es bastante más Pop que su viejos vecinos) que con su primer trabajo largo, Telekinesis! (Merge Records, 2009), ha llamado muchísimo la atención del público y la crítica indie norteamericana.Y si,  Telekinesis! es un trabajo sólido y variado (recuerda a veces a Beck…) que se puede escuchar bien a gusto en Spotify y ver en luminosos vídeos como este “Awkward Kisser” .

Vídeoclip fresquito del último sencillo de los Beach House, un dúo Dream Pop de Baltimore formado por la vocalista  francesa Victoria Legrand y el norteamericano Alex Scally. Dentro de una o dos semanas estrenarán su tercer disco largo, el prometedor Teen Dream (Sub Pop, 2010), un disco que suena muy en la línea de los últimos trabajos de  bandas como Glasvegas,  Gliss, Vivian Girls o The Raveonettes, todas claramente influenciadas por The Velvet Underground y The Jesus and Mary Chain y los sonidos Post Punk, Garage y Revival.

Desde el fabuloso ”Todo nos parece una mierda” de Astrud no habíamos escuchado un himno Pop tan redondo, irreverente y currado como este “Tus amigos” de Los Punsetes. “Que le den por culo a tus amigos…” A mediados del mes que viene, (y con portada de Joaquín Reyes) los madrileños lanzarán su segundo disco largo, LP2 (2010, Everlasting), y este primer adelanto resulta mucho más que prometedor. Pop de muchos kilates con un punto de surrealismo encantador. Y no hay que perderse ni un segundo del vídeo de “Tus amigos”, brillante y divertidísimo.

The Orchard envía una lista sin desperdicio de la que hemos elegido este electrónico y divertido tema de Cassettes Won’t Listen, el proyecto del músico y productor neoyorquino Jason Drake. Sólo hay que dedicarle un ratito a su último trabajo, Into The Hillside (2009), para que nueva y buena música rellene los espacios ocupados por los estribillos de Karmele y demás delirios eurovisivos.

Algunos críticos aseveran que Swoon (Dangerbird Records), el segundo disco largo de los californianos Silversun Pickups, es uno de los mejores y más interesantes de la cosecha de 2009. Lo cierto es que son muy atractivos, recuerdan mucho a los Smashing Pumpkins, tienen gotitas de Placebo y Suede, y no hay duda de que este ”Substitution” es un verdadero hit; y el vídeo de este tema, de los más chulos que hemos visto recientemente. Esta primavera se van de gira con Muse, ni más ni menos.

Que BazookaNut bebe los vientos por músicos y bandas como la ELO, Carpenters, Beach Boys o Burt Bacharach se adivina en cuanto llega alguna de sus recomendaciones. Y este “It’s Nice To Be Nice” de los Power Pop irlandeses Pugwash, parece haberse criado entre los brazos de Brian Wilson y Roy Wood. Un tema tremendamente optimista con grandes voces y mejor melodía que podemos encontrar en su álbum Jollity  (2006).

Pop Folk de Leeds con aroma del viejo Bollywood. Y mola. Resulta fresco, distinto y emocionante. Maggie 8 es un proyecto liderado por la bajista y vocalista india Nivedita Pisharoty y el también vocalista y banjo Mark Wright (Hood). Aún no han lanzado ningún trabajo largo, pero entre los epés y sencillos que han publicado hasta la fecha se pueden encontrar maravillas como este “Carry On”.
